Conflict and Corruption
FACILITATOR / EDITOR
Wasini is a small island in the Indian Ocean lying just 2 miles off the coast of Kenya in Pongwe-Kikoneni ward of Kwale County. Three decades of negligence and corruption, at all levels, have fuelled a bitter dispute between a wealthy family from Mombasa and the impoverished island community.
The land dispute and its impact on the small community were carefully documented by residents in a participatory video project initiated by Transparency International. A group of community members — women, men, youth and elders —from Mkwiro and Wasini joined the project to investigate their circumstances and record the testimonies of people from across the island. Their video is titled ‘Kilio’ meaning ‘Outcry’ in Swahili. I facilitated this project, while working for InsightShare, over the course of one year (2016-17).
“Gareth’s drive, dedication, diligence and exceptional professionalism significantly contributed to the success and impact of Transparency International’s Land and Corruption programme.”
